Bladder Tips for the Holidays

The holidays are a time for celebration, travel, and connection—but they can also be challenging for your bladder. Long car rides, busy schedules, festive foods and drinks, and disrupted routines often lead to increased bladder urgency, frequency, or leakage.

At Strength & Dignity Wellness, our pelvic floor therapy providers commonly see bladder symptoms flare during the holidays. The good news is that a few simple, evidence-based strategies can help you protect your bladder health and enjoy the season with confidence.

Why Bladder Symptoms Worsen During the Holidays

Holiday routines can unintentionally stress the bladder and pelvic floor. Common triggers include:

  • Inconsistent hydration
  • Increased caffeine or alcohol intake
  • Long periods of sitting or travel
  • “Just-in-case” bathroom trips
  • Fatigue and disrupted sleep

Pelvic floor therapy focuses on restoring coordination, strength, and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles—key components of healthy bladder function.

1. Maintain Consistent Hydration

Many people either drink far less water to avoid bathroom trips or overconsume fluids at social gatherings. Both patterns can irritate the bladder.

Pelvic floor therapy hydration tips:

  • Sip water steadily throughout the day
  • Avoid chugging large amounts at once
  • Aim for light-colored urine as a general guide

Restricting fluids too much can actually worsen urgency and bladder irritation.

2. Reduce Bladder Irritants

Holiday favorites often include common bladder irritants:

  • Coffee and caffeinated beverages
  • Alcohol
  • Carbonated drinks
  • Citrus juices and spicy foods

You don’t need to avoid these entirely. Instead, alternate irritants with water and pay attention to how your bladder responds. Typically, we recommend that at least 2/3 of your fluid intake for the day comes from water. And yes, herbal teas or added electrolytes

3. Skip “Just-In-Case” Bathroom Trips

Using the bathroom frequently “just in case” can train your bladder to signal urgency earlier than necessary. Overtime, this can result in increased frequency and urgency as our bladder is very trainable.

Pelvic floor therapy encourages:

  • Voiding only when there is a true urge
  • Gradually increasing time between bathroom visits
  • Building bladder confidence rather than fear

This approach supports healthier bladder signaling and control.

4. Practice Pressure Management Techniques to Prevent Leaks

If you experience bladder leakage with laughing, coughing, sneezing, or lifting, learning proper pelvic floor coordination can help.

A common pelvic floor therapy strategy is:

  • Exhaling to gently engaging the pelvic floor muscles before and during activities that increase pressure

This technique is highly effective when taught and practiced correctly with a pelvic floor therapy provider.

5. Protect Your Bladder While Traveling

Holiday travel often means limited bathroom access and long periods of sitting.

Helpful pelvic floor therapy–informed strategies include:

  • Wearing comfortable clothing that doesn’t compress your abdomen
  • Planning reasonable bathroom stops without overuse
  • Practicing relaxed diaphragmatic breathing to reduce urgency

6. Improve Nighttime Bladder Habits

Late nights, salty meals, and alcohol can increase nighttime urination.

To reduce nighttime bladder disruption:

  • Reduce fluid intake 1–2 hours before bed (without dehydration)
  • Elevate your legs earlier in the evening if swelling is present
  • Take your time fully emptying your bladder without straining
